The Shape of Digital Communications
to Come
Matt reflects after reaching a career milestone, and looks ahead to how the changing face of digital will look in years to come.
If you’re around the age of 30, for most of us there was a time in our lives where takeaway pizza, the curtains drawn, all your friends crammed on a sofa and the sound of video game theme tunes blasting out of our Mum and Dad’s TV were pretty much a staple Friday night.
Why?… The 16 bit gaming console.
Think Sega Mega Drive, the Super Nintendo and everything that went with it. Not only are we talking about that specific area of technical and creative development, but also the lead up to how gaming consoles even ended up in our home in the first place. We’ll be asking questions like: What were the companies like that were innovating and who had the ideas? What can we learn from them and how did they have so much impact with so little? What aspects of design and delivery can we learn from that era of technical brilliance? And why were they so addictive?
With our consuming habits having changed so much in the last 20 years it’s incredibly important that we evaluate where we’ve been in order to move forward. Plus, we might need to do an extensive amount of ‘research’ on gaming by hooking up some old consoles in the studio.
There’ll be plenty of opportunities to get involved, so make sure you do. You might need to try and beat our high score…
